German Federal Minister Dr Gerd Müller visits Phnom Penh

Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Dr. Gerd Müller visited the Kingdom of Cambodia with his delegation on 14 and 15 June 2016.
At the start of his visit in Phnom Penh Minister Müller had the opportunity to meet, inter alia, with the Minister of Labour, Dr Ith Sam Heng, as well as with various Heads of Mission and members of civil society and of the German development organisations (GIZ and KfW) on the occasion of a reception hosted by the German Ambassador Joachim von Marschall..
On 15 June Minister Müller visited a garment factory working at the outskirts of Phnom Penh, producing jeans for a German company; this factory closely cooperates with the regional programme of GIZ on social and labor standards in the textile and garment industries as well as the International Labor Organization’s Better Factories programme. After constructive discussions with the management of the factory Minister Müller had the opportunity to tour the factory and to get a first hand impression of the working conditions in the garment sector and of the female workforce in the country.
Dr Müller furthermore held talks with the Royal Government, including PM Hun Sen and the Vice Chair of the Cambodia Development Council, Minister Chin Bunsean, and the acting Leader of the Opposition, Kem Sokha. The talks focused on the current political and economic situation in Cambodia and the cooperation between Germany and Cambodia.
Minister Müller’s visit was part of a tour to East and South East Asia comprising his participation in the German-Chinese Government Consultations in Beijing and a visit to Myanmar.
