Joachim von Marschall and his wife, Catrione Garrett, continued their Cambodian road trip from 30th October to 4 November 2014, visiting the provinces of Pursat, Battambong, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap and Kampong Thom.
The purpose of these trips is to gain a more detailed picture of the opportunities and challenges currently facing Cambodia by meeting and talking to representatives of provincial administrations, development organisations working in the field and civil society outside the capital, Phnom Penh. In Battambong city, together with Anne Lemaistre, UNESCO representative to Cambodia, the Ambassador was given a detailed briefing by the GIZ supported master land use planning team on its successful completion of a District Development Planning instrument which now awaits approval at the national level. The delegation also toured the city’s heritage conservation area, the Ambassador delivered some equipment donated by Deutsche Bank to the Mighty Girls football Association.
In Pailin province, the Ambassador’s visit included a meeting with members of an agricultural cooperative and in Oddar Meanchey he received a briefing from the local representative of Malteser International on health promotion, food security and sanitation projects. In Kampong Thom the Ambassador met members of the local community, including lay health workers, who are active in ensuring that the poorest residents have access to the local district health centre.
