On December, 15, 2016 a half-day meeting between the committee chairmen of the Cambodian National Assembly and the Ambassadors of European countries took place. The occasion of the meeting was to exchange views on the first monitoring report of the Joint European Development Cooperation Strategy for Cambodia, 2014-2018.
After the introductory remarks of His Excellency Chheng Vun, Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and His Excellency George Edgar, EU-Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Monitoring Report was presented. During the dialogue, parliamentarians valued European assistance to achieve greater development and further reduce poverty in Cambodia. Support to sectors such as agriculture, education and health was particularly highlighted apart from European assistance to implement key reforms to strengthen good governance.
The German Ambassador Dr. Karsten underlined the important role of parliaments in a democratic system: “One of the National Assembly’s key roles is to link Government with the Cambodian citizens. I would like to encourage you to actively fulfil this role.”
During the reporting period (2014-2016), European partners have provided approximately 400 million USD (grants and loans) to the Royal Government of Cambodia. Additionally, contributions to UN-organizations and NGO projects in Cambodia were provided. With this, European partners as a group are the most important bilateral donor in Cambodia.
