Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for Professor Dr. Hans Leisen and Assistant Professor Dr. Esther von Plehwe-Leisen

On behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck, Ambassador Dr. Ingo Karsten conferred the officer’s cross of the order of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on Professor Dr. Hans Leisen and Assistant Professor Dr. Esther von Plehwe-Leisen. The conferral took place in a ceremonious atmosphere in the German Embassy in Phnom Penh on 4 August 2016.

Mr. and Mrs. Leisen fervently contributed to preserving important Southeast Asian world heritage sites such as the grand temples of Angkor and the temples of Ayatthaya and Borobodur. In the field of stone conservation, they strengthened Germany’s reputation as a reliable and proficient multinational cooperation partner. Moreover, Mr. and Mrs. Leisen were dedicated to theoretical and practical education of conservators in Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia. Thus, they ensured that their conservation work would have a lasting and sustainable effect.

Mr. and Mrs. Leisen were surprised and deeply moved and proudly accepted the decoration.
