The German Ambassador, Dr. Ingo Karsten, visited the biggest freshwater wetland site in southeast Asia, the Prek Toal Core Area at the Tonle Sap Great Lake. It was designed as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997 and in 2015 as a Ramsar site. The German development bank, KfW, is financing projects to protect the breeding sites of  rare pelicans and storks. The Ambassador was informed by representatives of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Rangers about the challenges of protecting and monitoring the breeding grounds of threatened waterbird species.
