The 23rd Anniversary of the Day of German Unity

To mark the 23rd Day of German Unity, His Excellency Ambassador Joachim Frhr. von Marschall together with his wife, Catrione Garrett, and the staff of the German Embassy welcomed 300 guests at a reception on the 17th of October at Raffles Hotel, Le Royal in Phnom Penh. Guest of honour was S.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister of Industry and Mining. In his speech, the Ambassador reminded those present of the momentous events in the run up to German reunification on 3rd October 1990. He also welcomed the growing mutual interest between Germany and Cambodia and expressed his belief that given the correct conditions, German interest in investing in Cambodia would increase. Ambassador von Marschall went on to thank the representatives of German governmental and non-governmental organisations for their exemplary work in the field of development cooperation in Cambodia.
Distinguished Korean musicians from the Phnom Penh International Arts Academy provided the musical framework for the reception, including the singing of the national anthems of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union anthem. Guests had the opportunity to inform themselves about German/Cambodian development cooperation through a small exhibition of the work of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the KfW Development Bank. German and Cambodian delicacies prepared by Raffles’ Indonesian born and German trained head chef were enjoyed by all the guests together with German wines and beer.
October 03, 2013marked not only the 23rd day of German reunification celebrations but also the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Phnom Penh.
