Enlarge image In 2010, the German Embassy Phnom Penh funded a school and community latrine micro-scale project in Lvea Em, Kandal Province, with 9500$ to promote health care and education. The project was implemented by the Cambodian non-governmental organization Asian Outreach Cambodia.

Rural Cambodians, who make up 80% of the population, have a very limited access to health care, water supply and sanitation facilities. Deriving from that – along with insufficient hygiene standards – the main consequences are communicable, but preventable diseases such as typhoid, diarrheal disease, parasite infestations.

Asian Outreach Cambodia has been working in Lvea Em, Kandal Province, in which 60% of the population live below or on the poverty line, in the sector of water supply and the construction of sanitation facilities for the last five years.

Through the financial support of the German Embassy Asian Outreach Cambodia was able to build an renovate several latrines in Enlarge image two schools and three communities. At Prey Russey Primary School and Prek Char Primary School two new latrines, water tanks and pipework to collect rainwater were built and two existing latrines were renovated. The total of 683 students are responsible for cleaning the latrines. In Bong Krom and Tuk Kleng Commune the substructure for 108 latrines was built from which 594 individuals may profit. Throughout the implementation of the project the members of the communities took an active part in order to strengthen and promote their responsible use and maintenance of the sanitation facilities as well as to transfer knowledge. Students, teachers and community members were educated by Asian Outreach Cambodia in the medical necessity and in using, caring and maintaining sanitation facilities as well as in good hygiene practices like washing hands.
