German Art Collector returns Khmer statue to Cambodia
The German art collector Dr. Wolfgang Felten on 5 December 2009 has in the presence of H.E. Him Chhem, Minister for Culture and Fine Arts, donated a valuable Khmer statue in Baphuon style dating back to the 11th century to the National Museum in Phnom Penh. The statue which was inscribed in a UNESCO list of 100 missing cultural treasures from Cambodia had been detected by Dr. Felten by chance in an art collection in Europe. Dr. Felten spontaneously decided to make it possible that the statue can be returned to its place of origin. The necessary funds for the buyback came from private funds of Dr. Felten.
H.E. Him Chhem in the name of the Cambodian Government expressed the high appreciation for this generous deed of the German donor and bestowed on him in recognition of his merits the Commander's Cross of the Royal Monisaraphon Decoration.
