Heppner - German Embassy Phnom Penh) On 4 February 2011, Dr. med. Chan Thong Sérey, president of the German-Cambodian Society (GCS), visited the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Phnom Penh. On this occasion he presented a leather character of the classical Cambodian shadow theater to the Ambassador Dr. Moser. The figure depicts the monkey king and was manufactured by young students on the premises of the GCS in the Siem Reap province. The leather studio is a learning environment for adolescents who want to acquire the craftsmanship to create shadow figures. At the same time, the studio preserves the tradition of the Cambodian shadow theater, a UNESCO world heritage since 2005.

The premises of GCS in the Siem Reap Province are called “House of Peace Preah Sihanouk Santereach”. The society runs an elementary school and offers continuing education in different fields. In addition to the aforementioned craft to create shadow figures, students can learn amongst other things the art of painting, several foreign languages and computer skills. Donations and membership fees fund the activities of the GCS. Donors can either contribute to the society in general or sponsor students directly. More information about the society, its activities and the sponsorship scheme can be found at www.friedenshaus-kambodscha.de.ms/ .
